K-BOB STAR transforms a non-mainstream East Asian woman into a fictional figure belonging to mainstream pop culture, offering a multilayered portrait of her life.
In this work, the artist’s grandmother, Young-lee Son, becomes a fictional pop star entirely detached from reality. Within this constructed world, she adopts the rap name Big Hand and performs songs inspired by well-known pop artists such as Cardi B. Through direct and unembellished lyrics, Big Hand reveals her life story and personal values. The lyrics of the five tracks included in her debut EP, "K-BOB STAR", were developed from handwritten accounts of her daily life and personal experiences.
Big Hand directly subverts themes commonly found in pop music, such as youth, self-love, and the emotions associated with adolescence and young adulthood. Instead, she sings about unconditional devotion to her family, repetitive domestic labor, and the everyday realities of a typical elderly Korean woman.
This project began as an attempt to better understand a loved one. Through the artist’s reinterpretation, Young-lee Son’s life is illuminated in a more complex and multilayered way.
