The Framing Grandchild, Single-channel video, 14:06, 2026
Who is living in “that time”? The grandfather, or the granddaughter who watches him?
Dong-hak Shin, an elderly man in his eighties from South Korea and the artist’s grandfather, often introduces himself as someone from North Korea even to people he has just met. Having watched him recall “that time” for more than thirty years, his granddaughter gradually comes to define him within a psychological frame.
Within a frame that deliberately obscures location, time, and sensory context, edited memories and sounds from “that time” are played on repeat. Amid the layering of multiple frames, the influence of a nation’s history on an individual life is subtly revealed. Positioned within a physical frame, he is redefined.
